Remove the Dell Search Page
This page shows the problem, background, and solution for the Dell Search page coming
up on Dell computers.
Problem:
A Dell Search page comes up when a Dell user enters addresses incorrectly, and sometimes
when the user enter the address correctly.
Background:
This page shows Google sponsored ads on a Dell Search site. Clicks on this
page generate revenue for both Google and Dell. A full explanation is available
on
Daniel Ulevitch's blog and in article by Danny Sullivan.
Solutions:
Several The solutions are varied and actually are reminiscent of spyware since it's
becoming harder to fix the problem.
- Fix 1: Using Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, remove the program named "Browser
Address Error Redirector."
- Fix 2: If this program doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs, you need to do a registry
hack. Remove the following registry entry by launching regedit or regedt32
from the run line:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\AFE
"AfeUrl"="http://www.google.com/hws/dell/afe?hl=en&s="
Warning: Don't modify the registry unless
you know what you're doing. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll
no longer be able to boot up your system. Be prepared for this worst case
scenario if you modify the registry directly.
- Fix 3: If the previous key doesn't exist, find and delete this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\BAE
"BaeUrl"="www.google.com/hws/dell-usuk/afe?hl=en&channel=us&s="
The way this has been going, it's very possible the key will change sometime soon.
If you know of a different way this is implemented on a system,
let me know and I'll post it here.
